What is a CPG file?
A CPG file is a project file created by Web page editor software, Cool Page. The software has become obsolete many years ago and is no more used. CPG file contained details about the objects used in the web page and the properties of these objects. CPG project files could be opened in the Cool Page software and after finalizing, the web page could be exported as HTML web page.
CPG File Format
The internal file format details of CPG file format are not known. These were saved as binary files and will only open in Cool Page software.
Key Characteristics of the CPG File Format
| Characteristic | Description |
|---|---|
| Plain Text Encoding | In GIS contexts, CPG files contain a single numeric codepage identifier (e.g., 65001 for UTF-8), stored as ASCII text without headers, matching the base Shapefile’s prefix like “roads.cpg” alongside “roads.shp”. |
| Optional Companion File | Non-essential for Shapefiles; defaults to system encoding if absent, but ensures consistent character display in multilingual datasets. |
| Binary Graphic Structure | For Clip Studio variants, employs proprietary binary format with MIME type application/octet-stream, supporting layers, vectors, RGB/Grayscale modes, and compression up to several MB |
| Multi-Use Flexibility | Handles ESRI codepages, FontLab definitions, Cool Page projects, or ComicStudio pages, with editability via specialized apps. |
| Platform Agnostic | Readable on Windows/macOS; no encryption standard, though software-specific protections apply. |
FAQ
Q1: What is the main purpose of a CPG file in GIS?
A: CPG specifies the codepage for Shapefile character sets, ensuring proper text encoding like UTF-8.
Q2: Can Clip Studio Paint open CPG files?
A: Yes, CPG stores editable comic pages with layers and vectors in Clip Studio Paint.
Q3: Is a CPG file required for Shapefiles?
A: No, it’s optional; Shapefiles default to system encoding without it.
Q4: What formats support CPG graphic files?
A: Primarily Manga Studio/Clip Studio, with RGB, Grayscale, and vector layers.
Q5: How large are typical CPG files?
A: GIS CPGs are tiny (bytes), while art pages reach MBs with compression.
