What is an XEX file?
An XEX file is an executable file format that is used for XBox 360 video game console applications. Xbox, the Predecessor of Xbox 360, uses the XBE file format for applications. XEX files are meant to run on Xbox 360 only and do not execute on PC. The default XEX files on XBox 360 console is named as default.xex that is responsible to control and download software updates for the device. This ensures the backward compatibility with XBox console.
XEX File Format
XEX files are saved to disc as binary files and can be executed on a XBox 360 console. These can also be opened and examined using the XEXTool software that can extract information from these files. XEXTool can also be used to modify these files.
