What is a RPMSG file?
An RPMSG file is an encrypted email message created with email client applications Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft’s email and calendar application. It is sent as a separate attachment to standard email messages and can only be opened by certain users. This restricts access of these files to other users whom are not destined to receive the information in these files. Generally these files are sent with filename message.rpmsg and can be downloaded as well from email, but will not work in this case.
RPMSG File Format
RPMSG files are saved to disc in binary file format. However, its file format specifications are not available publicly for developer’s reference due to encryption.
How to Open RPMSG File in Gmail on Mac and Windows OS?
To open an RPMSG file (Rights Managed Email) in Gmail on Mac or Windows OS, follow these steps:
On Windows OS:
Use Microsoft Outlook:
- RPMSG files are protected using Microsoft Rights Management Services (RMS), so they are best opened with Microsoft Outlook.
- Open your Outlook app and sign in with the account that the email was sent to.
- Once you open the email with the attached RPMSG file, it will automatically decrypt and open.
Install the Microsoft Rights Management (RMS) client:
- If you don’t have Outlook, you can install the Microsoft Rights Management client.
- This will allow you to view encrypted emails and attachments.
On Mac OS:
Use Microsoft Outlook for Mac:
- If you have Microsoft Outlook for Mac, you can open the RPMSG file in the same way as in Windows.
- Open the email in Outlook, and it will automatically decrypt and display the file content.
Use a Web-based Rights Management Viewer:
- If you don’t have Outlook for Mac, you can try using the Microsoft 365 viewer or Office Online to open the RPMSG file.
- Go to the Microsoft 365 portal, sign in, and open the file there if it’s a supported format.
In Gmail (for both Mac and Windows):
- Gmail itself doesn’t natively open RPMSG files. You’ll need to download the file and use one of the above methods (Outlook or Microsoft RMS client) to open it.
Quick Summary:
- On Windows: Open with Outlook or install Microsoft Rights Management.
- On Mac: Open with Outlook for Mac or use Microsoft 365 viewer.
