What is an AZW3 file?
AZW3, also known as Kindle Format 8 (KF8), is the modified version of the AZW ebook digital file format developed for Amazon Kindle devices. The format is an enhancement to older AZW files and is used on Kindle Fire devices only with backward compatibility for the ancestor file format i.e. MOBI and AZW. Amazon introduced KFX (KF version 10) format after KF8 that is used on the latest Kindle devices. AZW3 files have internet media type application/vnd.amazon.mobi8-ebook. AZW3 files can be converted to a number of other file formats such as PDF, EPUB, AZW, DOCX, and RTF.
AZ3/KF8 File Format
KF8 files are binary in nature and retain the structure of a MOBI file format as PDB file. As mentioned earlier, a KF8 file may consist of both a MOBI as well a newer KF8 version of EPUB later. The internal details of the format have been decoded by Kindle Unpack, which is a Python script that parses the final compiled database and extracts MOBI or AZW source files from it. AZW3 (KF8) files target EPUB3 version with the backward compatibility for EPUB as well. KF8 compiles the EPUB files and generates a binary structure based on the PDB file format.
Key Features of AZW3 Files:
Advanced eBook Format
- AZW3 is a Kindle-specific eBook format that supports more complex features than older formats like AZW and MOBI.
Rich Formatting
- AZW3 supports more sophisticated formatting, including advanced HTML5 and CSS3, allowing for better layout and design than earlier eBook formats.
DRM Protection
- Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption is often used in AZW3 files, restricting unauthorized sharing and ensuring that the eBook is only readable on approved Kindle devices and apps.
Supports Complex Graphics and Multimedia
- AZW3 files can include high-quality images, embedded fonts, and multimedia elements (audio/video), making them suitable for more interactive and visually-rich eBooks.
Smaller File Size
- AZW3 files generally have a smaller file size than other formats while maintaining a high-quality reading experience. This is due to more efficient compression and file handling.
Compatibility with Newer Kindle Devices
- AZW3 is specifically designed to work with newer Kindle devices and apps, making it more optimized for use on Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Oasis, and Kindle apps for iOS and Android.
Easier Navigation Features
- AZW3 allows for more user-friendly navigation options, like table of contents, bookmarks, and interactive links that improve the reading experience.
Supports Advanced Typography
- It supports advanced typographic features, such as font embedding and better handling of text justification, which allows for more flexible and professional formatting.
Kindle Store Integration
- AZW3 files are often purchased from the Amazon Kindle Store and are automatically synced across Kindle devices and apps via Amazon’s cloud services.
