What is an MP file?
An MP file is a project file created with the Personal Learning Edition (PLE) of 3D modelling program, Maya. It is supported by the PLE version of Maya only and is purely for non-commercial uses. For this purpose, Maya PLE edition includes a watermark on the exported file. Maya PLE provides limited functionality and can be installed on personal computers only. The MP file contains all the information about the project created with PLE and can be opened with Autodesk Maya PLE.
MP files contain all the project data, including 3D models, textures, lighting, animations, and scripts. However, they are exclusive to Maya PLE and cannot be opened in the full commercial version of Maya.
Key Features and Limitations of MP Files
1. PLE-Exclusive Format
MP files are not compatible with the full version of Maya. Users must recreate their work in a commercial edition if they want to use it for professional projects.
2. Watermark on Rendered Output
To prevent commercial usage, all renders and exports from Maya PLE contain a watermark, making them unsuitable for professional work.
3. Limited Functionality
Maya PLE includes restricted tools and features compared to the full version. Some advanced plugins and rendering options may not be available.
4. Cannot Be Converted to MA or MB Files
Maya’s standard formats, .MA (Maya ASCII) and .MB (Maya Binary), are not supported in Maya PLE, meaning MP files cannot be directly converted for use in the full version.
Compatibility & Workarounds
- MP files can only be opened with Maya PLE and are not supported in standard Autodesk Maya versions.
- There is no direct method to convert MP files to commercial Maya formats, but users can rebuild models manually.
- Some users attempt to export individual objects (e.g., as OBJ or FBX files) to transfer assets, but animations and scene data may not be retained.
Is Maya PLE Still Available?
Maya PLE was eventually discontinued, replaced by Autodesk’s student and trial versions, which now offer full-featured access with commercial restrictions.
